11th Annual

Joan Humphrey

Watercolours, Acrylics

Inspired by nature the focus of Joan's artistic expression is to capture and share the beauty of the natural world. Joan's love of nature was kindled at an early age in her childhood home on the South Shore of Lake St. Louis, along with pivotal summers spent in the Eastern Townships and the Laurentian Mountains.  The universal elemental experiences of wind, water, sun and earth became part of her spirit.

It was not until her mid life that Joan was able to apply her love of nature to the arts. Her formal entry into the society of Canadian artists was with the Lemonville Group of Artists in Stouffville Ontario. She also has attendedsummer classes at Haliburton School of the Arts since 1998. The input and support of fellow artists and the opportunity to learn many techniques from art instructors encouraged and inspired her emerging and developing personal style.

Joan was drawn to the atmospheric effects that could be achieved in painting in water colour. The challenge of working with a medium that does its own thing, often to create incredible results, is both rewarding and frustrating, however it always draws her back. Joan also paints in acrylics which allows her more flexibility and freedom to follow the direction that a painting suggests itself to her. Mainly painting landscapes she also paints the figure and animals as well as intuitive water colour.

Joan hopes to convey the awesome beauty and mystery that she experiences in witnessing our world.
